The pampa (South American temperate grasslands and associated ecosystems) extends from southern Brazil, advancing through Argentina and Uruguay. In Brazil, the pampa comprises an area of 178.243 km2, corresponding to 2% of Brazilian territory. This landscape has a wide diversity of vegetation, including grasslands, deciduous forests and pioneer formations, with a valuable flora including species of peculiar beauty. Embrapa Temperate Agriculture has researched pampa native ornamental plants since 2003 and plants suitable for landscaping and floral art are presented here. Plant populations were identified through field expeditions, information from local inhabitants and herbarium collections. Taxonomic identification, photographic documentation and ornamental characterization of each species with potential for use on floral art or landscaping were undertaken. Potential use for floral art was evaluated using traits that define the principles of floral composition, vase life and other relevant traits for floral art and markets. Evaluation for landscaping used plant architecture, color, texture, size, phenology and attraction by local fauna. In total 250 native species with ornamental potential, from more than 50 families, were identified. Inclusion of pampa native plants to cultivation may contribute to conservation strategies, diversify floriculture, promote regional development and add value to local flora. Flora of the Brazilian pampa has great diversity with many species from a range of families with ornamental potential for use in floral art and landscaping.
